Prototype Barske E-Pump

Two weeks from first reading about pump design to a working 20,000 RPM electric pump hitting 9.5 bar at 0.2 kg/s.

In the summer of 2025 I designed and built a small electric pump as a proof of concept to build confidence for a turbopump thesis. Target: 0.2 kg/s at 10 bar at 20,000 RPM. Result: 9.5 bar at 0.2 kg/s, limited by inlet pressure.

Key Details

  • Two weeks from reading my first page on pump design to full CAD; one more week for parts, integration, rig design and testing.
  • 20,000 RPM, 0.2 kg/s, 9.5 bar — designed for ~1 kW.
  • All custom parts SLA 3D printed for low cost and fast iteration.
  • Controlled with Raspberry Pi, drone ESC, ESP32s. IR sensor with reflective tape for RPM.
  • I used OpenCV to OCR a luggage scale and read needle angles for post-processing — a fun way to learn computer vision that worked surprisingly well.
